Waiting on a Revolution: a look ahead at the next-generation console wars

(by Duncan, @ 10:56 PM)

Jon "Hannibal" Stokes' latest article - Waiting on a Revolution: a look ahead at the next-generation console wars - makes for interesting reading:
..."We at Ars Technica have been covering "convergence" devices since the site's inception, and I in particular have focused on home networked devices and game consoles. As a kind of follow-up to my previous round of technical articles on the hardware that powers the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, I decided to step back a bit from the technical details and take a broader look at how the next generation of consoles fit into the home entertainment picture"...

Hi Mike, thanks for sharing that with us. It is indeed classic. Even better, since it coincides precisely with a point I've just recently made in a lecture, is the Stand Back, I'm Educated! - The Daily WTF post as it's is a classic example of the danger of not knowing such things ;-)

Incidentally, confusion about hexadecimal cropped up in the feedback from that lecture [see Lecture #7: One-Minute Paper - Frequently Asked Questions] and I've just updated the page with a link to that Daily WTF post.

Thanks again for sharing,

Duncan

Coding is great

(by Michael Devaney, @ 12:00 AM)

Been reading this site for a while and thought I'd share this with your blog. Its a great read for programmers - this is exactly what not to do on your final year project. Check it out http://thedailywtf.com/ Coders submit segments of the most shocking code they find in projects that they are forced to maintain. Read and learn.

For example, todays entry made me laugh.
"The problem with "logic" is that it makes things out to be nothing but simple dualities. Proponents of logic want us to believe that everything is true or false, black or white, yes or no, paper or plastic, etc. Thankfully, there are some among us, like Mark Harrison's colleague, who are not afraid to stand up to these logic advocates and shout "no, I will not succumb to your false dichotomies!" Today, I think we all should salute those few brave people ...

enum Bool { True, False, FileNotFound }; "
Classic.

Mike

mum.jpgToday is the first anniversary of Mum's passing. There's not a day goes by when Mum hasn't been in my thoughts. God bless you Mum.
