Forget-me-not

(by Duncan, @ 11:05 PM)

Today, for the first time ever, I forget to pack my iBook in my rucksac before leaving for work. I didn't realise until I was on the train and by then It was too latet to do anything about it! With hindsight I did think my rucksac was a wee bit lighter than normal but subminally must've put that down to the fact I had packed fewer books, etc., than usual.

Needless to say I was without e-mail, web, and apps for the rest of the day so I managed to get quite a bit of paperwork done ;-) The other downside was that once I got home this evening I had >200 e-mails - 95% of which was spam - waiting to be downloaded.

Had this been the only thing I'd forgotten recently then I wouldn't be too concerned but on Wednesday I left the very same rucksac - luckily I'd unpacked my iBook which was safely in my office by then - in a tutorial room. Once I'd unpacked my book and folder I'd put the rucksac down out of sight of the bench at the front of the room and at the end of the tutorial I just picked up the book and folder, bade my students goodbye, and left. I didn't realise I was missing the 'sac until I was due to head out of my office to give a presentation to about 40 careers advisers. Panic! It slowly dawned on me that I'd probably left the 'sac in the tutorial room - a realisation that was confirmed when I met a couple of students that were at the tutorial and when I asked them if they remembered if I'd had my rucksac with me at the tutorial they told me that I had, indeed, left it in the room. They thought I was going to return so hadn't bothered to pick it up and return it to me!!

Now what was the point of this post... ;-)

HOW-TO: VNC secure tunneling using Windows PuttY ssh client.

(by Duncan, @ 12:00 AM)

via SiT - HOW-TO: VNC secure tunneling using Windows PuttY ssh client.
"Achieved results: Secure connection to remote desktop using open source VNC or Tight VNC software (that is normally doesn't encrypt traffic other than password). As a "side-effect", shorter response times achieved due to ssh efficient traffic compression. Also, no additional port is left open other than ssh port on remote server/router/firewall"...

Personal Server

(by Duncan, @ 5:33 PM)

Intel "Personal Server" research: mobile computing in the palm of your hand
..."Smaller than PDA-class devices and without traditional input/output (I/O) capabilities such as a keyboard or display, the Intel Personal Server concept prototype links wirelessly to existing infrastructure to provide ubiquitous access to personal information and applications. With a focus on miniaturization, Personal Server technology could also integrate into a PDA or cellular phone, extending the capabilities of current consumer electronic devices.

The Personal Server concept would enable any computer with a small amount of additional software installed, to perform as if it were the user's own computer. The local computing infrastructure will support the Personal Server not only by providing a display and keyboard, but also by enabling access to other local resources such as printers, the Internet, and high-performance desktop processing"...
