RE: Dunbar Grammar School

(by Duncan, @ 12:18 AM)

Don Ledingham's has posted his follow up and thoughts on web logging for schools. We both hope that some of students - university and school - contribute to this thread. As can anyone else of course who has an interest in weblogging to support teaching and learning.

Comments welcome in response to Don's post and/or my reply. Thanks.

A Matter Of Trust

(by Duncan, @ 12:34 AM)

via hbwt and Scripting News - A Matter Of Trust

I guess I could add 'trustworthiness' to my reasons for holding certain weblogs in high regard in the list I included in my reply to Seth's post about 'The National Post, on Weblogs'.

David Wiley: Online self-organizing social systems

(by Duncan, @ 12:14 PM)

David [SiT] urges us to read the Online self-organizing social systems: The decentralized future of online learning [pdf] paper from the (David) "Wiley Writings".

Any recommendation from SiT is worth the read and this paper is certainly no exception. Coincidentally, it is very much along the lines of what Don Ledingham and I discussed yesterday.

Supporting Collaborative Information Sharing with the World Wide Web: The BSCW Shared Workspace System

(by Duncan, @ 12:55 PM)

Supporting Collaborative Information Sharing with the World Wide Web: The BSCW Shared Workspace System
The Basic Support for Cooperative Work project (BSCW) at GMD is investigating the feasibility of extending the W3 to support such collaborative working. In this paper we report on the design and implementation of the BSCW Shared Workspace system; an extended W3 server which provides basic facilities for (primarily asynchronous) collaborative information sharing, activity awareness and integration of external applications across Macintosh, PC and Unix platforms. The system integrates the simple facilities found in ftp--namely storage and retrieval of documents--with more sophisticated features such as group and member administration, check-in/-out facilities and access to meta-information regarding documents and members. In addition, the system provides a simple, event- based awareness service to inform users, at-a-glance, of the current status and past changes to information held in the workspace.

Brent's last day at Userland

(by Duncan, @ 5:23 PM)

Scripting News
Today is Brent's last day at UserLand. I couldn't let it pass without saying what a champion he is, and how envious I am of his new freedom. He created a lot of the software I use and it's wonderful stuff. He also kept his eyes on our servers, kept them running, did the cleanups, basically anything he was called on to do.

Thanks Brent for all you've done for us, and best wishes and much success and happiness on your new path.

I wholeheartedly second these best wishes. All the best Brent. I think you'll find quite a few messages like this on people's weblogs.

[52.139] Computer Organisation...

(by Duncan, @ 12:44 AM)

I'm going to be pretty busy from now until the end of semester as my half of [52.139] Computer Organisation... kicks in now that Tim has finished his lectures. Lots of student -> lots of assessments. Not to mention the exam papers that need to be written B-(

Today, I'll be revising my forthcoming lectures and, perhaps, using LogicWorks for the first time to build, and illustrate, some of the sub-components of a computer system.

Patch Tool

(by Duncan, @ 12:49 AM)

via TW - Eric Soroos' Patch Tool
This is a developer tool that provides patch and diff services for Usertalk scripts in Frontier and Radio Userland. Its integration level is currently roughly that of app glue. There are plans to use this core to provide comprehensive source management.

This is a much needed tool.

Thanks Eric

Stepwise | HTMLEditorX - A new beginning

(by Duncan, @ 2:17 PM)

via vfth - Stepwise | HTMLEditorX - A new beginning
HTMLEditorX is a document-based multi-window HTML source editing application. The goal is to introduce users to the Cocoa frameworks, and walk them step by step through the building of an application.

Following along with this series and building the application should give you a good grounding in Cocoa just in time for Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in May!.

Stepwise | HTMLEditorX, Part 1 - Introduction

Thanks Stepwise!
