Doc Searls Weblog

(by Duncan, @ 12:06 AM)

Doc Searls Weblog
I was asked for some advice to pass along to a class of graduating young people. It wasn't bad for something I pulled out of my butt in about three minutes, so I thought I'd post it somewhere before it got lost in the outbox.

icab 2.3 68k version

(by Duncan, @ 1:36 AM)

IE4.01 runs like molasses in winter on Pauline's Performa 630 with 8MB RAM. Not surprising really. So I'm trying out iCab pre-release 2.3 and it certainly feels snappier and there's much less disk thrashing and more sustained modem activity. It certainly throws up a page quicker than IE4 since it fills in the graphics after the text. I like it a lot. Time will tell if it's a marked improvement.

I checked out the price of Performa expansion memory earlier and found 32MB SIMMS for the Mac at $36. I wonder if there's a UK supplier with similar prices. Must look later. I'm sure 36MB (4MB + 32MB) would make a world of difference ;-)

iCab 2.3 rocks

(by Duncan, @ 2:09 AM)

I am very impressed with this latest version of iCab. Especially nice for machines with slow modems and low RAM configuration is the ability to filter images by URL and/or by size. No more annoying banner ads for me!! iCab renders pages very quickly indeed - and that's over a 28.8k modem. And it's only a 3MB footprint so the VM hardly kicks in since the OS is less than 6MB too.

Shopping at IKEA

(by Duncan, @ 11:53 PM)

I'll be virtually back at work tomorrow (Thursday), it's been almost a two week break and now I'm regretting not doing more than I did workwise. But the break was good and it was great to spend the time with the family over Christmas and New Year.
