What is Gunk Dunc

By popular demand from the students, I will be repeating the Gunk Dunc series. I've also said to the students that, as an added bonus(!?), I'll consent to a shaved head, (face-)painted blue - as per the Blue Man Group that advertise Intel's processors - if I am pledged more than £250. As anyone who knows me knows this would be the ultimate 'humiliation' ;-)

I have pinned up posters around the department which contain details and there will be more information, photos from previous years, and - later - photos and probably a video, on my http://duncan.smeed.org/comicrelief web page.

Here's the announcement:

event=gunkDunc();
gunkDuncTime=noon; /* and 3pm? */
if (pledges >= £250){
   event=event+blueHeadShave();
   blueHeadShaveTime=11;
}
where=outsideSportsHall;
printf("Sponsor Duncan!!n");

I have left an official Red Nose Day form in the CS coffee room for anyone who would care to sponsor this event, or you can sponsor me by e-mailing duncan@cs.strath.ac.uk [this obviously only applies to my colleagues]. So please do. Many thanks to those that have already done so. There's still some way to go to reach £250 although I am fairly confident that the students will raise a fair amount. Why £250? Well that amount this year will take the total of Gunk Dunc contributions (from past years) to over £1000.

Gunc Dunc - 1996

A couple of weeks ago I phoned up for a Comic Relief supporters pack which arrived last week. Comic Relief day is on March 16th this year. Seems that the students want a repeat of Gunk Dunc - can't imagine why - so this time I'm giving them plenty of warning of the impending event. Gunk Duncs from the past have raised over £750 for the charity so hopefully I'll be able to take advantage of my 'popularity' and raise a substantial amount again this year. My target is at least£250 this time to get over £1000 in total. I'm quietly confident that this is a realistic target. I normally leave it until the last minute to arrange the stunt but this year it'll be different. One other indicator that the students might be keen to participate is that when I was asked by student at a lecture whether I was going to do it and when I replied in the affirmative there was a very positive response ;-). That and the fact that when I asked the students at the lecture when Comic Relief day was one student wise-cracked "not soon enough!" Needless to say we almost all ROTFL at that!!

Comic Relief Announcements

I'm susbscribed to the Comic Relief e-mail list. Here are the latest details including information about online donations if you can't make the Gunk Dunc event in person. If you do donate some money this way as a result of Gunk Dunc then please let me know by e-mail - duncan@cs.strath.ac.uk - so that I can thank you personally.

Dear Duncan,

Make a huge difference and join the Comic Relief galaxy of stars who are helping to end poverty and promote social justice in the UK and Africa. An online donation need only take 3 minutes of your time, but the difference it makes could last a lifetime. http://comicrelief.0mme.com/UM/T.ASP?A23.62.6.1.7248

When you make a donation, make sure you tick the GIFT AID box: that way, for every pound you give, the UK Government will give us an extra 28p. Staying in was never this good! From 7pm Friday night on BBC1, catch exclusive Comic Relief performances from Robbie Williams in The Fast Show, Smack the Pony, EastEnders the final eviction from the Celebrity Big Brother House and that Ali G interview with the Beckhams in full and of course, your chance to see where your money goes and the huge difference you're making.
