In many ways, it is not surprising that weblogs represent a 'small world'. I successfully linked Duncan's Jotter to the weblog of a Silicon Valley venture capitalist in only 3 steps - "3 degrees of freedom".

Over the last 5 years we have unwittingly lived through perhaps the most significant discontinuity in science for 300 years - the end of the reducitionist era started by Renee Descartes - and the beginning of the era of sysnthesis with the emergence (pun intended) of Network Science.

For a better explanation of why blogs represent a small world, see Duncan Watts' "Six Degrees" or the older "Small World" and Albert-Laszlo Barabasi's "Linked".
