Following on from interest and ideas expressed in the Thoughts on a society thread and posts on a local newsgroup, a new student society held its inaugural meeting in the Department today. I am pleased and proud that more than 20 students turned up to support the idea of a society whose aim is to basically that outlined in Joe's Thoughts on a society....

I was also pleased that the meeting agreed to adopt Iain's working title of 'geekSoc' as the formal name of the society. This demonstrates that the founding members do have a self-deprecating sense of humour and don't have any hang-ups about referring to themselves as geeks. I also find it interesting that many of the committee members are drawn from the set of students that are in my BlogTree.com list. Namely:

I've offered to act as liaison between geekSoc and the Department.
