In BigPub Weirdness Dave Winer takes issue with the apparent lack of recognition for UserLand's generosity:
...We care about people knowing about our innovations. We don't file patents so other developers can compete with us. But please don't penalize us for our philosophy of generosity. Thanks.
I have a lot of sympathy for Dave's POV. Personally I have found Scripting News to be a rich seam (of links) to cool ideas and technologies and have benefitted greatly from UserLand's innovations/products - either directly as in the case of Radio Userland (and Frontier), or indirectly as in the case of Conversant - and Dave's vision. I've mentioned this before but it bears repeating.
To give you some idea how influential Dave has been here are links to my undergraduate project of the past four years. Picking the theme of some of these projects was relatively straighforward - hang on to Dave's coat-tails. It's the acronym construction that takes the time - especially as you have to work in the likes of RU [Radio UserLand], C [Conversant], X M & L [XML], SOAP , Z [Zope], RSS [RSS ;-)], K [Knowledge] and recursion! I like to think I set challenging, interesting (and relevant) projects. Not all students like to be 'challenged', or fully appreciate the relevance, or are as interested as I am in these areas! This might explain why not all of my projects in any one year get taken on. Which also explains why some appear in subsequent years ;-)
So, even though I may not always agree with Dave's opinions, I do respect his ability to identify/invent new and interesting technologies. Thanks Dave
