Talk about blowing something out of proportion, but I imagine the IOC
doesn't want people from other countries making political statements by
flying other flags (i.e., some Turkish athlete who wants to wear some
Kurdish symbol, etc.)
One of the most egregious things on this count I've ever heard of occurred
at the summer Olympics in Atlanta where several spectators were removed
from a table tennis match because they produced a Taiwanese flag and
proceeded to wave it around. Of course, Taiwan is not allowed to compete
under that flag and even spectators are apparently barred from displaying it.
