"As a first move toward setting up the organisation named Eclipse, IBM yesterday said it would place $40m (£27.6m) of its own software into the public domain.

An IBM spokesman said Eclipse was formed to provide a "unified experience of all development processes and all development tasks - such as testing, performance, tuning and de-bugging". The idea, he said, was to integrate new all-platform software with exisiting e-business software."
